Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is an advanced therapy targeted at strengthening the body’s self-healing capabilities to heal wounds, combat swelling, pain & fatigue. Here are some of the benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment:
- Improves rate of healing
- Decreases swelling and inflammation
- Increases the body’s ability to fight infection
- Deactivates toxins
- Promote new blood vessel growth
- Helps remove toxins and metabolic waste
A Few Facts About Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
In the year 1662, a physician built the first hyperbaric chamber and believed that the pressure could be helpful in treating certain respiratory diseases.
In the 1940s, the Hyperbaric oxygen treatment was a standardized therapy for military divers in the United States.
FDA Approved Conditions for HBOT
The U.S. FDA has approved HBOT for 17 Conditions meaning that most insurance covers the treatment for these conditions.
- Diabetic Wounds
- Infections
- Radiations Burns
- Crush Injuries
- Acute Arterial Insufficiency
- Thermal Burns
- Diabetes-Related Wounds
- Radiation Tissue Injury
- Chronic Refractory Osteomyelitis
- Compromised Amputation, Skin Graft or Flap Site
- Sudden Hearing Loss
- Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
- Cyanide Poisoning
- Gas Gangrene
- Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections
- Decompression Sickness
HBOT has been shown to be effective for many conditions that have yet to be approved by the FDA. These are optional treatment often not covered by medical insurance.
- Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
- Lyme Disease
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD)
- Firbromyalgia
- Crohn’s Disease
- Complex Regional Pain
What is it like to be treated with HBOT?
In a relaxed environment, the patient is rested for 90 to 120 minutes. Inside the chamber, the oxygen is 100% and the pressure is about three times greater than normal which improves the body’s ability to heal wounds.
What to Expect During the Treatment?
During the Hyperbaric oxygen treatment, you’ll be made to breathe pure oxygen in a special chamber. Some facilities have a huge enclosed space where dozens of people are treated at a time. However, the majority have individual chambers.
You’ll be asked to remove all your clothing and wear a special gown that is 100% cotton, which makes you feel comfortable throughout the procedure.
Then, you’ll have to lay on a table that goes inside the chamber, that’s a clear plastic tube which is 7-feet long.
You’ll be asked to stay relaxed & breathe normally. You can either watch your favorite Netflix series or listen to soothing music.
You can speak to the therapist during the procedure, he/she will be by your side all the time. The medical staff will take the next step to seal the chamber and pressurize with pure oxygen. The pressure will be 2.5 to 3 times more than what’s normal.
After the therapy, the trained staff will depressurize the chamber.
What to Expect Post the Hyperbaric Oxygen Procedure:
After the therapy, you can expect a sense of lightheadedness and tiredness, these symptoms will fade away on their own in less than 12 hours. The number of treatments required is determined by the extent of the wound, and how well the wound has responded to the first session.
